When I told my colleague I was planning a visit to Greece during the winter months, he thought I was crazy. He said that Greece was not great in winter… too cold, go in summer. Now, if you’ve been reading my posts, you’ll be well aware that I often don’t follow the advice given, haha! Well, not completely anyway. I usually take in all the awesome recommendations… and visit during the colder months. The perks of winter travel include off-season upgrades, and more importantly – much smaller crowds. Seriously worth considering!
So what exactly can you do in Athens during winter? Check out our guide below!
Pláka – Stay + Explore.
Pláka (Athens Old Town) is a cute, historic neighbourhood in the nicer part of central Athens. The area boasts neoclassical architecture, a labyrinth of cobblestoned streets and a beautiful backdrop of the Acropolis. Pláka’s village-feel will distract you from the touristy shops that mingle among authentic.
Athens was built around the Acropolis, and hence every house was constructed with a view to the significant landmark (as informed by our guide). We chose to base ourselves in the beautiful Palladian Home after researching the area. Ideally, you should aim to stay for at least 4 days.
Free Walking Tours.
Walk like a local! I recommend you do this on your first day if possible. After reading many positive reviews, we chose to join the Athens Free Tour as a nice introduction to the city. Our local guide Eleni was amazing! She shared such passion and enthusiasm for all things Greek. We hit all the major landmarks on foot, watched the Changing of the Guard and learned a few key phrases along the way. So much fun! …don’t forget a generous tip at the end 🙂
Acropolis.
Learn, recount and relive ancient history. Download the Rick Steves Athens Audio Tours (free) to your phone before you go (and remember to bring your headset, so you don’t disturb others around you). Oh, and if you happen to be visiting during special Free Admission Days, you might just save yourself €20, as we discovered!
Ancient Agora.
Despite being surrounded by austere ruins, the Temple of Hephaestus is reminiscent of a time of past glory. The remaining ruins tell a story of Athenian struggle and conflict.
Changing of the Guard.
Watch the Evzones fling their Ypodetes and Foustanellas during this honorary ceremony at Syntagma Square.
National Archaeological Museum.
A fascinating lesson in Greek history. So many artefacts, you’ll want to spend a few hours here.
Greek Food.
In the land of generous servings, you must try the moussaka, pastitsio, dolmades, gyros and baklava! If you’re more of a herbivore like me, never fear… there are so many wonderful veggie options. Vegan Beat was great for a casual, quick bite and friendly conversation with the chefs. Avocado smashed out some wickedly healthy smoothies and delicious dinner delights.. Trust me, you won’t leave hungry!
Day Trips.
Keep exploring! If you have time, do a day trip to Delphi, the Ancient Corinth or Nafplion. Athens Limo offer some great trips and can be flexible with your requests. When snowfall resulted in road closures towards Delphi, our trip was redesigned to visit the Peloponnese region of Greece… and it was stunning!
Things to note:
Taxis have an ongoing war with Uber. Though most Uber drivers you call, will be taxi drivers. Private transfers can be booked in advance by your hotel (often for a slightly higher fee, but this provides you with reassurance you won’t get ripped off by a taxi). If you have to take a taxi, always insist the meter is turned on.
Decorative orange trees are everywhere. You will see many ripe-looking oranges. These are not juicing oranges. Avoid eating them.
If you’re lucky enough to experience a rare snow event in Athens, enjoy it! It only happens once every 10 years apparently… and it’s absolutely beautiful. Though expect Athens to be at a stand still until the snow melts.

So many people had described Athens as dirty, and I understand this when walking around certain parts, graffiti and buildings in disrepair; but Athens has a great share of beautiful places to view, certainly more than a fair share of historic sites. Plus Athens feels more genuine than the branded generica plastered cities that litter the world. Athens in Winter is awesome!
