Lithuania’s capital Vilnius is a southern Baltic city characterised by a rich, yet tumultuous history. A colleague had recommended we spend more time in Vilnius than Tallinn, however this really comes down to what you expect to experience from your trip. If history is your thing, then Vilnius will certainly keep you busy, however I personally would spend more time in Tallinn or Riga. That being said, Vilnius is a very interesting town that you should not overlook when travelling through the region. Below a list of must-do activities to add to your Vilnius trip.
Visit the Old town (Can you tell I’m a fan of Old Towns yet?)
Try the local delicacies at the Christmas markets… you’ll be surprised at what you will find! 😄🎄
Go on a free Walking tour, then wander at leisure.
Hike up to Gediminas Castle and climb the Tower to enjoy views over the city.
See artefacts from past wars and reflect on the horrific mistreatment and injustice of Lithuanians at the Museum of Genocide Victims.
Wander through the beautiful parks.
Cross the Vilnia River and enter the tiny Republic of Užupis – a country within a country!
Make some cute, furry feline friends at the Cafe Cafe (Tip: the cafe always appears busy, so make sure you book ahead). Grab a cattaccino! 🐱☕️
Solve riddles and relax in a Geek room at Novotel Vilnius. I absolutely had to book this room… complete with puzzles and nerdy paraphernalia, this was an entertainingly comfortable abode to call home for a few nights.

What a wonderful world in Lithuania. I love reading your article DM and when I see the amazing pictures it’s just like I’ve been there, thank you for sharing. Going on a walking tour sounds like a good idea, you get to see more – how great! The furry felines are so cute – My cat would love to be friends with them. The Old Town is interesting, though I don’t know if I want to know the full story on the mistreatment of Lithuanians.

Vilnius is clearly undergoing major renovation – the city has an eclectic feel, and great history that is well worth stomping around on the walking tour.
