We spent last Christmas in Riga and what an amazingly understated little city this is! With far fewer crowds, gorgeous festive markets and an incredibly beautiful Art Deco district, Riga is a Baltic town you absolutely must add to your list. If you’re planning a visit to Riga, add the following to your list:
Get lost in Old Town… Wander around the older part of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed city.
Get directions… join a Walking tour. Most are free, with the option of a tip at the end (be generous, the guides are awesome!). Our favs: Riga Culture tour + Old Town historical tour.
Climb a few steps… reach the top of St. Peter’s Church for panoramic views over the city.
Nibble on… gingerbread and sip on hot apple cider at the Christmas markets (December).
Refuel… with a plant-fix at a vegan restaurant. To my surprise, there were no shortages of vegetarian options. Fat Pumpkin is a favourite among locals… Tip: try a whole bunch of their starters – the flavour combinations are a foodie’s dream!
Relax in style… Hotel Relais le Chevalier is a beautiful boutique hotel combining French and Italian influences. The Suite Bonaparte is fit for royalty, with an amazing view of the Old Town. I highly recommend reserving it for that special occasion.
Staff are friendly and offer a bar service 24/7. Breakfast is served on the top floor. Be sure to peak out the window… the view is stunning! And OMG, request the pancakes 👌
Visiting in December was a treat! The city is rich in history, with a spectacular backdrop. Planning a trip? Do it! 😍

Christmas time is coming! It’s so nice to remember… already been a year since you went to those beautiful places. You have seen the beautiful Christmas markets all across Europe and walked around the different heritage places, that is awesome👍 I wouldn’t wanna do the long distance walking and climbing you do. You will surely need a good coffee with gingerbread and perhaps good vegetarian dinner😋 and I’m sure a goodnight’s sleep in the Suite Bonaparte too 😘
