Zagreb is Croatia’s understated capital. The city is too often overlooked, as people flock to popular Dubrovnik or choose to cruise along the Dalmatian coast instead, although cruises are unlikely high on your to do list right now, all things considered. Admittedly, the main purpose of our trip was to visit UNESCO World Heritage Plitvice Lakes, and Zagreb was an ideal base.
The city of Zagreb is beautifully decorated with a blend of Gothic, Neo-Renaissance and modern architectural styles. It is a city with a terrifying history, amazing food and is located within reach of Heritage-listed nature sites. We suggest spending at least 3 days exploring Zagreb. Why? Here’s why…
Architecture… just marvel at those buildings and statues!
History… learn about Zagreb’s bloody backstory
You can wander through picturesque Gornji Grad–Medveščak (Upper Town) alone or visit one of the many museums. Though really, the best way to experience a city’s history and culture is through the eyes and guidance of a local.
We joined the Free Spirit Walking tour starting at Ban Jelačić Square. Our awesome guide, Luka, led us through Gradec and Kaptol, uncovering a dark, medieval history, while also visiting the Stone Gate, St. Mark’s Church, Lotrščak Tower and Zagreb Cathedral.
The tour lasts for 2 hours and you can grab a snack and local crafts from the Dolac Market along the way. Be sure to ask your guide for recommendations. And don’t forget to offer a tip at the end 🙂
Food… OMG, Croatian tartufi (truffles)!
Need I say more?! Grab your foodie fix at Retoran Boban. Or venture out to the forest for some truffle hunting 😀
Nature… amazing places like Plitvice Lakes are nearby!
Stay…
There are some lovely luxury hotels, though for this trip we chose an AirBnB apartment for the little luxuries of ‘home’.
Zagreb is certainly a city worth discovering. Consider it as part of your next adventure!

Croatia is a destination that I look forward to returning to.
